The Project

Poly is proud to share our plan for a remarkable 80-acre property in Altadena that will allow us to enhance our athletic program as well as our environmental science, outdoor education, and health and wellness offerings.

The Project

Poly plans to transform a remarkable property in Altadena that has been the decades-long home of Nuccio’s Nurseries. Upon deciding to retire and close their business, the Nuccio family presented Poly with the opportunity to buy the 80-acre property, including the 13-acre nursery site, to enhance our athletic and outdoor education offerings.
Poly will provide shuttle transportation for student-athletes from the school’s campus in Pasadena.

The Opportunity

At Poly, we view athletics, health, and wellness as part of a well-rounded education. However, we are severely limited by having only one field on campus for lower, middle, and upper school students. Many of our Varsity and JV teams play on undersized fields, or rely on rented space off-campus that can be hard to secure each season.

We also want to strengthen our experiential science offerings to allow students to apply what they are learning about environmental science and ecology in the classroom to field exercises and hands-on laboratory experiments in the natural world.

Our plan stays within the current 13-acre nursery footprint with approximately 12 acres dedicated to playing fields and open community space.

There will also be residentially-scaled support spaces, including locker rooms, areas for coaches, student gathering spaces, and classrooms for experiential learning. The remaining 67 acres of the property will be permanently conserved and protected as open space.

“One of the things that we are really excited about is creating beautiful outdoor spaces and courtyards for our students to find time to have a snack or to do a bit of homework or connect with one another before practice.”

Preserving a Community Resource

Poly is committed to permanently protecting more than 80 percent of the property as open space.

We will also guarantee public access to hiking and equestrian trails on the property, which Poly will improve and maintain, and create separate parking and restroom facilities for community members enjoying outdoor recreation.

We are also eager to explore potential partnerships with schools, nonprofits, and other organizations in Altadena to benefit from these new facilities.
